The Unlikely Connection Between Metal and Classical Music

When it comes to the world of music, few genres are as polarizing as metal and classical. While some may see them as vastly different forms of expression, others argue that they share a common thread. As someone who has delved into both worlds, I firmly believe that metal is, in fact, the closest thing to modern classical music.

One of the primary reasons for this assertion is the level of musicianship required to play each genre. Classical music demands a much higher caliber of musicianship than metal, with complex theoretical underpinnings and intricate structures that must be thoroughly understood. In contrast, metal, while technically demanding in its own right, often relies on raw energy and aggression rather than subtle nuance.

Another point of convergence between the two genres is their use of structure. While both metal and classical music are heavily scripted, with a clear beginning, middle, and end, they differ in terms of instrumentation and audience acceptance. Classical music typically features traditional instruments such as violins and cellos, while metal often employs electric guitars and drums.

Despite these differences, there are certainly bands that blur the lines between metal and classical. Apocalyptica, for example, is a Finnish band that uses classical instruments to perform metal covers, defying expectations and pushing the boundaries of what we consider 'metal.' Neurological studies have even shown that fans of metal music exhibit similar neurological wiring to those who appreciate classical music.

So, when do we draw the line between metal and something else? For me, it's not a defined boundary. Instead, I believe that heavy metal is an evolution of classical music, with its own unique characteristics and sensibilities. Halestorm's cover of Dio's 'Straight Through the Heart' is a great example of this fusion, as it seamlessly blends metal riffs with classical instrumentation.

In contrast, when we attempt to cover a piece of classical music, any deviations from the original score are immediately noticeable. In metal, however, there are many substitutions that can be made without compromising the overall sound or feel of the music. This flexibility is one of the key reasons why heavy metal is often seen as a more accessible and adaptable genre.

Finally, it's worth noting that jazz theory, while sharing some similarities with classical music, is actually closer to pop music in its underlying structures and harmonic progressions. Metal, on the other hand, has a unique theoretical framework that sets it apart from both jazz and classical.

For me, heavy metal is not just a genre of music – it's a way of life. When I was growing up, there was no other music that spoke to me like hard rock and heavy metal did. As I began to study music theory in high school, I realized that metal was, in many ways, the closest thing to modern classical music that we have today.
